Yesterday I retired.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Actually, it was four months ago. <\/span>But today I got up and felt useless.<\/span><\/p>\n

It didn't happen overnight, even though it feels like it. Retirement was wonderful at first. My time was finally my own. There were no alarms, no deadlines, no rush-hour traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

But after a while, something changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had plenty of time.<\/span><\/p>\n

What I didn't have was purpose. <\/span>And purpose<\/strong> is what drove most of us for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

The alarm went off because people depended on us. We went to work, ran businesses, raised families, solved problems, paid bills, fixed things, and made decisions. We were busy\u2014sometimes too busy\u2014but we had purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n

At first, it felt like freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n

No boss. No schedule. <\/strong>No pressure<\/strong>.<\/span> Then something unexpected happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

You begin to wonder why you got up this morning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nobody is waiting for you at work. Nobody is asking you to solve today's problems. The phone doesn't ring as often. The schedule that controlled your life for decades suddenly disappears.<\/span><\/p>\n

And before long, many retirees find themselves asking a question they never expected:<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Am I still useful?\"<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I believe this is one of the greatest challenges of retirement, and it's a challenge that money alone cannot solve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most retirement articles focus on finances. Finances are important. We all need enough money to live comfortably and securely.<\/span><\/p>\n

But retirement is about much more than money.<\/span><\/p>\n

  • It's about having a reason to get up in the morning.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • A reason to exist.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Your reason.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Your purpose.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    For forty years or more, your identity may have been tied to what you did. You were the manager, the parent, the business owner, the mechanic, the teacher, the nurse, the supervisor\u2014the person people counted on when something needed to be done.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Then one day, you\u2019re no longer the one in charge.<\/span> No decisions to make.<\/span> No problems waiting for your solution.<\/span> The job disappeared, but the need for purpose didn't.<\/span> I know this feeling because I've lived it.<\/span><\/p>\n

    After owning a business for many years, collecting Social Security, working additional jobs, and eventually fully retiring, I've faced the same questions many retirees face.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Retirement wasn't simply a financial adjustment, i<\/span>t was an emotional adjustment.<\/span><\/p>\n

    I had to rediscover who I was and why I was here. What could I do to feel useful again?<\/p>\n

    One thing I've learned is that usefulness doesn't disappear with retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It simply changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The world may not need you to do the same things you did at age forty or fifty, b<\/span>ut it still needs your experience, y<\/span>our wisdom, y<\/span>our encouragement, y<\/span>our humor, and y<\/span>our willingness to help others.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Maybe that means: <\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Volunteering.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Helping a neighbor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Learning a new skill.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Finally pursuing an interest you've postponed for years.<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Doing something completely unexpected.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Here's a thought that may sound a little strange:<\/span><\/p>\n

      Retirement is the art of becoming a beginner again.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

      Most of us spent decades becoming experts.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Retirement gives us an opportunity to become curious again.<\/span><\/p>\n

      We can learn new technology,<\/span> start a hobby,<\/span> write, <\/span>teach,<\/span> create,or <\/span>serve. <\/span>We can now grow with a freedom we haven't had in decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

      As I write this, I'm learning things I never imagined I'd be learning at this stage of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Some days I make mistakes.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Some days I feel completely lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

      But I've discovered something important.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Growth feels a lot better than sitting still.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Making mistakes is part of life, and retirement is now part of yours. So if something isn\u2019t working, take steps to change it.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Sitting around doing nothing? Find something that gives your day purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Drinking all day and feeling sorry for yourself? Reach out for support and find a healthier way forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Wishing you hadn\u2019t retired but resisting change? You can\u2019t rewrite the past, but you can shape what comes next.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Sometimes we know exactly what's wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

      We're bored.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>We're lonely.\u00a0 <\/span>We're inactive. W<\/span>e're drifting.<\/span><\/p>\n

      And instead of waiting for someone else to fix it, we need to take action.<\/span><\/p>\n

      One small step:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Call a friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Take a walk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Join a group.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Find a part-time job if that's possible for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Start something.\u00a0 ANYTHING! <\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Action creates momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n

      The truth is, you were useful and you can still be useful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Retirement is not the end of usefulness.<\/span><\/p>\n

      It is an opportunity to discover new ways to use the gifts, experience, and wisdom you've spent a lifetime developing.<\/span><\/p>\n

      We're not finished yet.<\/span><\/p>\n
